R.I.P. MICHAEL JACKSON

All popular music is rooted in Blues and Jazz. I hope we as people of color wake up to that sooner than later. My book contains three essays about this A HISTORY OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN JAZZ AND BLUES. Knowledge is power! See Denise Jordan's informative eblast on this subject, below.

MJ
& THE JAZZ CONNECTION

Most people probably don't think Michael Jackson had a connection to jazz. Well think again. Jackson is connected to Motown and Motown is connected to jazz. If you listen to some of the Jackson 5 songs, they had prominent jazz musicians playing on them. Joe Sample a keyboardist and Wilton Felder, saxophonist were both members of the Crusaders. guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. & of course Quincy Jones,Tommy Tedesco and Earl Palmer also played on some of those records. The Funk Brothers played on a myriad of records as well.

The list of artists he sang either with the chorus or part of the background is lengthy.  When Jackson was with the Jackson Five, he sang background on  "Papa was a Rollin' Stone", the smash hit for the Temptations.  He sang background on Stevie Wonder's hit "You Haven't Done Nothing" with the Jackson Five.  He was featured on the Quincy Jones song "The Dude", Donna Summers' "State of Independence", "Say, Say, Say" with Paul McCartney just to name a few.

Other artists have recorded their version of some of his songs.  Piano player Dave Gruisin recorded the Jackson song "Human Nature".  Isaac Hayes recorded the Jackson Five hit "Never Can Say Goodbye" Norman Connors recorded his new single "Rock with you", featuring Ray Parker Jr. and of course many others.

A RICH MUSICAL LEGACY INDEED!
RIP

MICHAEL JACKSON
