Joan Cartwright
is a native New Yorker. She’s been singing since the tender age of 4, in front of large
audiences. She is a composer, lyricist, lecturer and dynamic performer. She was
commissioned to write The Census Blues in 2000. Joan has worked
with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Philly Joe Jones and Freddie Hubbard who recorded her
composition, Sweet Return, in 1983. She’s been a bandleader for
22 years. Joan has performed at the Blue Note (NY), Jazid (Miami), O’Hara’s
(Fort Lauderdale) and Hemingway’s (Hollywood). She toured Europe from 1990 to
1998. Her CD, Feelin’ Good, was recorded in Sicily, in 1995, with
the Giovanni Mazzarino Quartet. In 1998, Joan founded Gaiafest, Women in
Jazz and produces workshops, lectures and concerts, annually.

Dave Hubbard
from Maryland,
began playing sax at 13, with the Baltimore Municipal Band. He’s worked with
Maxine Brown, Gary Bartz, Joe Chambers, Ray Charles, Patti LaBelle, Kenny
Dorham, Roy Haynes, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Lonnie Liston Smith. He composes and
arranges, and has over 50 recordings on Mainstream, Atlantic, RCA, Columbia,
Blue Note and Sybarite Records, with Les McCann, Joe Jones, Charles Earland and
George Benson. In New York, Dave played at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center,
Village Vanguard, Village Gate, Minton’s, Halfnote, Count Basie’s, Fat
Tuesdays, Blue Note and Actor’s Theater Workshop.

Yoel Hyman is from
Elizabeth, New Jersey. He studied piano, composition and arranging at the
Manhattan School of Music. He’s worked with John Scofield, Bob Mintzer, Frank
Foster, Rosanna Vitro, Donna Allen and Nicole McCloud.

Alex Berti is from Venezuela. He is a bass virtuoso and has composed for and played with the
Venezuelan Symphony, One Hundred and One String Orchestra and Miami Symphony. He
came to the U.S. on a full scholarship to FSU in Tallahassee. Also to his credit
are jingles with Chuchito Sanoja for TV, radio and cinema. He’s toured Europe,

Kevin Dewberry
is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He’s played drums since the age of 9, and
began playing professionally in 1985, with Spectrum, a trio from Morris Brown
College. Kevin backed up Marlena Shaw, Peabo Bryson, Phyllis Hyman and Isaac
Hayes. He’s freelanced with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Najee, Alice Day, Tony Bishop,
Mark Murphy, Ira Sullivan and Eddie Higgins.
