In my book A HISTORY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN JAZZ AND BLUES, I set out to prove that Jazz and Blues is inherently AFRICAN AMERICAN. It is not African. It is not European. It is not American. It is AFRICAN AMERICAN music created in an atmosphere of human intolerance, European obsession with ownership and degradation of Africans in America. My book illustrates that the innovations of African Americans were the result of their harsh experiences in America. Therefore, it is impossible for white bands to sound like black bands for this simple reason. They can only be imitators not innovators. |
